Start with three answers

Write down your nationality, your current basis for staying in Poland and the purpose of your continued residence. EU citizens follow a separate registration procedure; nationals of non-EU countries apply for permits tied to a specific purpose. Temporary protection is also different from an ordinary residence permit. Choosing a form simply because a friend received a “card” is risky: their basis for residence may not fit your circumstances.

If you work

For a standard temporary residence and work permit, you need your employer’s details and the attachment they sign electronically in MOS. Discuss the position, pay, working hours and contract duration in advance: the application must describe the actual job. A separate work permit and a combined residence and work permit are different documents. Some categories are covered by exemptions or special procedures.

If you study

Check that the selected basis matches your type of study. For the student application provided in MOS, the university completes its own section. Prepare evidence of admission or continued study, financial resources and insurance as required by your procedure. A student ID alone is not enough for the whole application.

If your basis is family

First establish your relative’s status in Poland and the family relationship. Family members of a Polish citizen, an EU citizen and a foreign national with a Polish residence permit follow different procedures. For civil-status documents, check the translation and authentication requirements. If the person covered by a family reunification application is outside Poland, check the exception to MOS submission: a paper application is provided for that situation.

Collect documents without unnecessary costs

Organise four groups of documents: identity, purpose of residence, financial support and insurance, and payments and confirmations. Match them to the selected form’s requirements rather than an intermediary’s generic checklist. The new MOS requires readable scans of every passport page, a photograph and proof of both payments; additional documents depend on your basis for residence.

Plan your costs

The fee for a standard employee’s temporary residence and work permit is PLN 440; for many other temporary residence purposes it is PLN 340. The residence card costs a separate PLN 100. Document translations and intermediary services are not included in the official fee. Before making a transfer, check the payment details published by the competent authority: do not assume the permit fee and card fee go to the same account.

What to monitor after submitting

Keep your UPO, the official acknowledgement of receipt, and your address for service. Then comply with requests to present originals and provide fingerprints. If you change employer, residence purpose or address, do not assume the record updates itself. Read the conditions of your decision and the relevant notification or amendment procedure first; sometimes a new procedure is needed. Do not use old documents for a new job without checking.

What you should not assume

Submission does not mean a positive decision. Lawful stay while the application is considered depends on meeting the submission conditions; permission to work and the right to re-enter across the border are assessed separately. Do not buy tickets based only on UPO or a former passport stamp. For the practical submission sequence, open the related step-by-step guide.
